Dr. Ilene Segal is a native of Newton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Newton South High School in 1979. She attended the University of New Hampshire where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Zoology in 1983. After completing her undergraduate studies, Dr. Segal attended Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1987.

After working for almost a decade as an associate veterinarian in various local veterinary hospitals, Dr. Segal established Parkway Veterinary Hospital in 1996. Over the years, the positive feedback and expressions of satisfaction which Dr. Segal and her staff have received from their clients have made her work all the more rewarding and worthwhile.

Dr. Segal is a general veterinary practitioner with professional interests in acupuncture and canine rehabilitation therapy. She completed an International Veterinary Acupuncture Society course in 2001 and earned certification in Canine Rehabilitation from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Segal is also member of the advisory board and a visiting instructor at the Bancroft School of Massage Therapy in Winchester, MA.

Aside from her veterinary profession, Dr. Segal maintains active membership in several local organizations such as the New England Women's Business Owners Association and the West Roxbury Business Association, and sponsors Parkway Little League and Pop Warner Football.

Ballroom dancing, hiking, knitting and kayaking are some of Dr. Segal's hobbies. She is the proud owner of a handsome young Dalmatian, Tycho, and a mischievous cat named Miss Kitty.

Dr. Sandy Higgins graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1986 with a B.S. Degree in Biological Science. A few years after receiving her undergraduate degree, she attended Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine from which she received her Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1992. As a veterinary student, Dr. Higgins excelled academically. She was a member of Phi Zeta Society (Honors Society) and graduated Cum Laude. Following veterinary school, Dr. Higgins completed a 13-month internship at nearby Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Jamaica Plain.

Dr. Higgins hobbies include ice skating, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her two boys Daniel and Michael, and husband Fred. Her pets include a young Golden Retriever, Champ, and a cat named Niki.

Alett Mekler
received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College outside of Toronto, Canada in 2002. Upon graduation, she then pursued an internship in Small Animal Medicine at the University of Illinois followed by a Veterinary Oncology dedicated internship at Michigan State University. In addition to her degree in veterinary medicine, Alett also has a Master of Arts degree in Economics. In her free time Dr. Mekler enjoys training for marathons, traveling, and photography. She shares her home with her fiancé, Hugh, Riley the Jack Russell, Toffee the Chihueagle, and two kitties, Kiwi and Pesto.

Heather has been a veterinary technician since 1994, and came to us from Houston, Texas in 2000. Previous to her position at Parkway Veterinary Hospital, Heather volunteered at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital and the Houston Zoo, and has worked at several small animal, exotic, and avian veterinary hospitals. She plans to eventually attend medical school to study integrative medicine, but for now enjoys spending as much time as possible with her family.

Emmanuelle received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Emmanuel College. Prior to her position as technician at Parkway Veterinary Hospital, she worked as a zookeeper at Franklin Park Zoo in Jamaica Plain. Emmanuelle loves creative, hands-on projects and is a wonderful cook. Her two pets are a cat named Lias and a guinea pig named Truffle. She has been applying to veterinary programs with the intention of becoming a doctor of veterinary medicine.

Nancy is a receptionist who came to Parkway with seven years of experience in the pet industry. Starting as a salesperson for Especially for Pets in Newton, MA in 1991, Nancy quickly worked her way up to Store Manager. Her communication skills, as well as her passion for animals, made the perfect combination for a successful retail store with many loyal patrons. Nancy previously had a small pet photography business and was instrumental in raising money for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. She lives in Newton, MA with her family, including a Golden Retriever and several fish.

Julie began as a receptionist at Parkway in 2004, and in 2005 was asked to take on the position of Office Manager. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from Bridgewater State College, and prior to that studied Speech and Language Pathology at Northeastern University. She has worked as a pharmacy technician, nanny, and preschool teacher, and her mother doesn’t understand why she went from working with kids to animals. She might tell you that animals generally don’t talk back, although her cats Isis and Napoleon can be mouthy sometimes.

Danielle is a certified veterinary technician who received her Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. She will soon be attending a certification course in Canine Rehabilitation. Danielle provides dog-sitting services and has been a foster parent to many kittens. Outside of work, she enjoys softball, camping, and other outdoor-related activities. Danielle is a member of the American Dog Owners Association and the proud owner of a Rottweiler-mix, Nelly, and handsome felines Toby and Jake.

Jessica also attended Mount Ida College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Technology. She joined our staff in 2004. Jessica's pets include her Corgi, Hayleigh, a cat named Lily, and a sprightly blue car named Simon. Jessica is both our resident small animal dentistry specialist and expert in all things Disney related. She is currently attending a Regis College program at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she will receive an Associate of Science degree in Nursing.

Liz, too, is a certified veterinary technician who attended Mount Ida College. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Veterinary Technology in 2002. She has been a technician since 1998 and worked at several veterinary hospitals before joining Parkway in 2004. Liz enjoys skiing, snowboarding, hiking, rollerblading, swimming, and travelling. She recently welcomed a Maine Coon mix named Bump to her home, where he is keeping Seymour the turtle company. Bird, a dove, lives with us here at Parkway.

Amy is a receptionist who moved to Boston from Bethlehem, NH in January of 2005 and joined our staff later that same year. Her interests include photography and local music, and dabbling in graphic design. She has recently taken on some pet-sitting assignments, but the animals she loves most are her cats Preston and Wicket.

Kelly is a veterinary technician from Brockton, Mass. who has previous experience working as an office manager at a veterinary hospital in Hanson. Outside of Parkway Vet, she also works as a phlebotomist, traveling from location to location to perform blood draws. She has a Great Dane named Lucy and a menagerie of cats: Pebbles, Michael, Katie, Chloe, and the most recent addition, Penny.

Sandie is a receptionist who joined our staff in August of 2006. She was employed at New England Veterinary Oncology Group in Waltham while working toward her Master of Social Work degree from Boston College, which she was awarded in 2004. She has been married for eight years; her husband received his Ph.D in Educational Psychology, also from Boston College. They share their home with a cat named Wolsey, who is more affectionately known as “Boob”.

Anne is a student at Mount Ida College working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Technology.

Tina is a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, but graciously fills in occasionally here at Parkway.
